On September 27th, 2024, Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina, destroying Lalena “Punkin” Roberts’ home and claiming many of her over 100 birds, including her beloved emu, Bobo.

While Bri Simon restores coral reefs by removing smothering debris and Ben Yamamoto advocates against the depletion of marine resources, both are united by a profound love for the ocean. Though their methods differ, they share a common urgency regarding the water's future. Together, their complementary work illustrates the diverse strategies required to protect and revitalize our marine ecosystems.
